Around fifty automobiles have been smeared with what appears to be blood from a person in the Germany's city of Hanau near Frankfurt, according to police.

Vehicles, exterior walls and mailboxes were vandalized, sometimes with swastikas, they announced in a official communication.

Police report they were alerted during the night on Wednesday, when a resident noticed that a automobile in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been covered with a reddish substance.

The substance had been placed in the pattern of a swastika, they reported.

Police then found numerous other smeared vehicles and building exteriors in the surrounding area.

Nazi symbols are illegal in Germany under legislation banning the visible presentation of Nazi symbols.

Officials state early analysis suggest the fluid was likely blood from a person.

"Currently there is no clue as to its origin; officials are presently not informed of any physical harm in association with the incident," they stated.

Municipal representatives announced they were trying "to resolve the incident" and have appealed to the community for information.

An important political figure said the incident left him without words and needed to be solved promptly.

"This event strikes at the core of Hanau and reopens the trauma of the right-wing terrorist attack half a decade ago," he stated on social media, referring to the killing of nine victims by a shooter targeting individuals of immigrant origin in 2020.
