Japan's Pioneering Woman Prime Minister: An Unprecedented Moment with Caveats

For many young girls in Japan currently, the image of Sanae Takaichi assuming leadership as the nation's inaugural female leader is powerful and formative.

This signifies a male-oriented culture and a government structure that has historically been controlled by men is currently headed by a woman.

But while the optics suggest a progressive moment, some women don't see her as an champion of progress.

It was rather interesting to observe how individuals outside Japan have responded to the news,” a 21-year-old says.

“Everyone's like, ‘wow, she's the first female prime minister in the nation's past and that would be a great opportunity for female advancement and equal rights in Japan’.

“I think that's a very naive interpretation.”

Conversely, the young woman points to her “political beliefs and what she represents,” adding: “She reinforces the patriarchal system.”

A big fan of Britain's first female prime minister, Sanae Takaichi has long aspired to be the “Iron Lady” of her country.

Similar to Thatcher, Takaichi is a firm conservative.

Observers say her ascension is a strategic decision from the governing LDP to attract the more conservative base which had recently gravitated towards Japan's more extreme conservative groups.

Takaichi opposes same-sex marriage and has consistently voted against legislation that would permit married couples to have different last names, preventing many women from retaining their birth surnames.

She's also against women being in line for succession in the royal household.

However, she did soften some of her statements during her campaign – saying she supports giving financial benefits to businesses that provide daycare services to their staff and mentioned possible deductions for families investing in child-rearing.

Yet she has over the years backed the idea of a more traditional role for females in society and in the family.

Regarding gender matters, Takaichi is consistent with her country's less than impressive record on gender issues.

The Country's Inequality in Context

Women in Japan are some of the most highly educated and highest qualified in the globe and yet they face challenges with the demands of a conservative society that still directs them into traditional roles.

According to the 2025 equality ranking by the World Economic Forum, Japan placed 118th among nearly 150 countries, with women's presence in the field of politics particularly minimal.

Top roles have traditionally been dominated by males and Japan has struggled to boost the number of female lawmakers and business leaders.

The globally fourth biggest economy ranks last among the G7 countries when it comes to the percentage of women in its legislative body. In detail, women constitute about 15.7% of lawmakers in Japan, the smallest proportion among the G7.

It is even slow when it comes to female healthcare: recently was it announced that the “morning after” pill – a type of post-coital birth control sold over the counter in more than 90 nations – had finally been approved for over the counter use in Japan.

Differing Responses to the Historic Leadership

Even so, some see Takaichi's ascent as a critical juncture that could change how women view their prospects.

“It is highly meaningful in Ms Takaichi becoming prime minister, with a wider influence on society,” a former mayor – who became the country's youngest female city leader in 2012 – told Japan's Kyodo news agency.

She contended Japan having a woman prime minister will “reduce mental obstacles” for females of all ages, helping them feel it is acceptable to “stand out” as leaders in businesses and the community, even as biased expectations and expectations still remain.

However Audrey Hill-Uekawa notes that, while it is remarkable Japan has its first female leader, one must remember it took her over three decades to reach that position.

“She's also not truly challenging the grain. She expresses the identical views as the male politicians.”

Ms Hill-Uekawa adds that she shouldn't be put on a pedestal simply because she is a woman.

“It is essential to ensure we're talking about her policies. We need to be capable of evaluate her equally as everyone else.”

Ideological Context and Associations

It is not only what Takaichi has said which has led people to label her as a supporter of the male-dominated system.

Additionally, it is apparent by who her champions within the LDP have been.

She was mentored of the late former hawkish prime minister a previous leader, and was backed in the party vote by a senior politician – a senior figure in the ruling party at the leadership of one of the government's most powerful right-wing factions.

His faction's support for Sanae Takaichi was pivotal in uniting the party's right wing in her favor.

“I believe that it is challenging for women to sort of relate to her achievement because it furthers this notion that we have to be obedient with the status quo,” 21-year-old a citizen says.

The 21-year-old agrees, saying that with her as a figurehead for women in politics, “the public are likely to anticipate the same from us as too”.

“They will demand women to be conforming, not go against the beliefs that they hold, and it could render our role harder.”

Upcoming Obstacles and Expectations

Making history, though, was only the initial of the challenges Takaichi will face – including tackling a slow growth and rising prices and winning back the trust of a discontented and angry electorate, as well as welcoming president Trump within a short time of assuming office.

One can reasonably assume that few anticipate women's rights matters to be high on her agenda.
