The Brothers from the Dagestani Region Excelling in Mixed Martial Arts and at Manchester United.

Ibragim Ibragimov smiles as he reflects on how his family's life has transformed since relocating to England from Dagestan eight years ago.

"I am fond of it here," the PFL star remarks.

"We often remark, 'this was the country I ought to have been born in.'"

The young man left his home in the Caucasus region of Russia because his father believed a relocation covering more than 3,000 miles would provide superior career prospects for him and his siblings.

The original idea was for Ibragim and his three brothers – Amir (17), Gazik (16), and Muhammad (15) – to complete school before enrolling in one of the nation's universities.

However, reality now looks somewhat different for the Ibragimov family.

Ibragim is now a professional MMA fighter and is viewed as one of the leading prospects in the PFL, a leading MMA organization.

His brothers have taken a different route in sport and have each been signed by Manchester United – with Amir pushing for a position in the first team.

"The primary goal for us is to extract the maximum out of our sports," explains Ibragim.

"I desire them to represent every one of the finest teams in the world. Today it is Man United, tomorrow it might be a another team."

Starting as Wrestlers to Football Prodigies

Located in southern Russia, Dagestan holds a mythical reputation among combat sports enthusiasts for generating a number of UFC champions in the past few years.

The region has a rich history in wrestling, excelling in the combat sambo discipline and producing numerous Olympic and world winners.

This success is not a coincidence, though, as children from the region are frequently encouraged to take up fighting, specifically wrestling, almost as soon as they can walk.

"As a young, my dad was constantly instructing me and my younger brothers that we needed to be strong, firstly to defend yourself, your relatives, and your friends," says Ibragim.

"So we all became accustomed to fighting, and that's why people knows how to fight in Dagestan. It's not a surprise."

"Amir was a excellent wrestler. You can see the move from wrestling to football; obviously, it assisted my little brothers a lot."

"Many of the footballers he faces don't have the identical base he possesses. That's why he's stocky, strong and incredibly competitive – due to wrestling."

Amir was only nine years old when he was put through his paces at Sheffield United. Not knowing of his real age, trainers placed him with boys significantly older.

He was not intimidated by the oversight and was perfectly comfortable holding his own against older players because of his experience in wrestling.

"They believed Amir and I were the identical age, so the story goes," says Ibragim.

Amir was signed, together with Ibragim's little brothers Gazik and Muhammad.

The family's stay in South Yorkshire was brief, though, as only weeks after joining the Blades, Manchester United learned of Amir's talent and he moved over the Pennines as a result.

"They played Manchester United in a competition and Amir scored a spectacular free-kick," recalls Ibragim.

"One of their talent spotters watched him play and selected him straight away."

Half a dozen years after joining the Old Trafford club and at the age of 15, Amir became one of the youngest players in the club's history to practice with the senior side when he achieved this in April 2023.

"Do you know what he said to me? 'Here is where I belong'," Ibragim says.

"Is he able to be a first-team player for Manchester United? 100%. They should let all the youthful players get game time now."

"I don't think they would play less effectively than the existing starters. I believe the youngsters are more motivated than the current first-team players."

Since then, Gazik and Muhammad, the latter once on the books of Manchester City, have also made the move to Manchester United.

"Gazik, this youngster is gifted," continues Ibragim.

"He picked up everything quicker than everyone else. He's a solid defender. He's going to be similar to a new Rio Ferdinand for Man United."

'A Goal' to Fight at Old Trafford

Ibragim has also moved to Manchester and spends most of his days sharpening his MMA skills at Manchester Top Team.

In August, he spent three weeks in his native region at Khabib Nurmagomedov's gym, assisting Islam Makhachev prepare for a November UFC title fight.

"I would never have imagined I would be training under Khabib," Ibragim says.

"He was the greatest fighter in the world – and we constantly used to idolize him when we were young."

"Now, I'm here in his gym and training with Islam Makhachev."

Fresh from working with two UFC champions from Dagestan, it is unsurprising Ibragim states he is eager to claim a world title of his own someday.

However that does not stop him from occasionally dreaming of playing for United and stepping out on the hallowed turf at Old Trafford, much like his brothers.

"I had a PlayStation at home and I always used to play as Man United, scoring with legendary players," he says.

"Today, for my brothers to be Man United players, it's like a dream come true."

"A fight at Old Trafford? It's a ambition for me. I was discussing with the PFL officials about it to see if they would do it. It would be enormous."
