Two Victims Identified in the Providence Campus Attack as Authorities Press On With Manhunt for Perpetrator.

The pair of scholars who died in the recent mass shooting on the university campus were honored at the start of the week – as a manhunt for their assailant continued following the discharge by local law enforcement of the only individual detained in connection in the case.

Honoring a Lost Student

Ella Cook, a sophomore from Alabama, was described as “an amazing, stable, pious, radiant soul”, according to the Cathedral Church of the Advent, Birmingham, which honored her memory at a gathering on Sunday.

She served as the vice-presidency of Brown’s branch of the College Republicans organization, according to the organization. The White House press secretary also expressed sympathies online, stating: “It's indescribable. Thinking of her family and friends, particularly her mother and father.”

An International Student

The second fatality was MukhammadAziz Umurzokov from Uzbekistan, a citizen of Uzbekistan in his first year of studies at the renowned school, according to relatives.

His name was verified by the Uzbek Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

“He was exceptionally gentle, witty, and bright. He harbored grand aspirations of entering the field of neurosurgery and assisting patients,” Samira Umurzokova, his sister said in a tribute.

The Shooting Incident

Nine other people were hurt in the violent event in the engineering department of Brown’s campus in Providence, during the school’s final exam period.

Authorities said on Sunday evening that a man aged 24 detained in a raid at a Hampton Inn about 17 miles from the scene earlier in the day was set to be freed.

“We have a murderer out there,” stated the state's top prosecutor, Peter Neronha.

He added, “Occasionally a probe goes down a path, and then you must reassess and go in another, and that’s exactly what has happened over the last 24 hours or so.”

Public Fear

The city's mayor, Brett Smiley, acknowledged: “This will probably generate fresh anxiety for our city”.

The shooter opened fire inside a room in the engineering building on Saturday, discharging in excess of 40 shots from a 9mm handgun, a authority reported to the news agency.

Police that raided the inn found two handguns and two loaded 30-round magazines when the suspect was detained, as was reported.

Condition of the Injured

Regarding the nine injured, one student was allowed to go home, said Brown’s president, Christina Paxson. Seven more were in grave but unchanging health, and one was in critical condition, police said on Sunday.

A private school, a private K-12 school in the city of Durham, said Kendall Turner, Kendall Turner, was one of the critically injured.

Further Tributes

Tributes were paid to Cook at a church service in Birmingham on Sunday. A clergyman said, “Her presence was a wonderful, steady, pious glow not only during her upbringing... but at the university she was an incredible light in that particular place as well.”

Martin Bertao, Martin Bertao, posted a statement from the club. “She was famed for her bold, brave, and kind heart as she aided her club and fellow classmates,” he said.

Jonathan Henick, Jonathan Henick, said he was “extremely sorrowful” by the student's death in a tribute. “Our profound condolences go out to the Umurzokov family, friends, and peers and lament the passing of his potential.”

National Context

Saturday’s killings at Brown, the seventh oldest in the US higher education institution with about 7,300 undergraduate and postgraduate students, occurred during one of at least 392 mass shootings recorded nationally so far in 2025, according to statistics. The following Monday was the 349th day of the year.
